Whole Community Evaluation Meeting.

An evaluation of the Library Services was carried out through a full community meeting where the people were invited to comment on the advantages and disadvantages of the Library.

Eighty-eight members of the Community attended this meeting.

Benefits of the Library service identified in the evaluation meeting included:

·        improved capacity to generate an income

·        learning new vocational skills

·        improved communication in English

·        supporting secondary and university students with books and encouragement

·        learning to speak English with visitors

·        learning Swahili

·        fun events and competitions

Aspirations for the future included:

·         starting an Employment Skill Development Club in catering and music

·         learning Swahili (75% of those attended wanted to learn more basic Swahili)

·         improving their vocational vocabulary in English

·         a Library users uniform

·         teachers for the Employment Skill Development Clubs

·         glasses for those with distance vision problems

·         a formal children's activity program

·         more opportunities for children who are not able to attend school

·         free progress tests (currently they are charge at 60 pence per year)

·         share books with nearby villages

As many of these aspirations require investment, the Community was advised to assist in the process of achieving their aims by finding ways to demonstrate their commitment to donors in the UK.  For example in the way the Tailoring Development Club made clothes, by hand from used cement sacks until they obtained machines and material.  The Community were also requested to source and cost the teachers and resources that were needed to help them and produce a proposal for consideration.  Proposals received will then be used to attract investment for the specific activities to which they relate.
