Activities for children

Fifteen children took part in stenciling animal motifs on the wall of the dedicated Library and signing their names.

Ten children took part in an hour of gymnastics, including stretching and somersaults.

The Kabubbu Community Primary School Football Team played a Kabubbu adult team.

Kabubbu Community Library Football and Netball Tournament

The Kabubbu Community Primary School Football Team played a Kabubbu adult team in the Kabubbu Community Library Football and Netball Tournament.  The children, who won the match were presented with medals, donated by the UNESCO Youth Ambassador and all participants received certificates.  The teams were very pleased with the 3 footballs and dribbling cones donated to the Library for sporting events, by one of the EMCOR volunteers.

Two local netball teams played a match and were delighted with the coloured bibs, to identify the different teams, which were donated to the Library by an EMCOR volunteer.  Competitors received certificates and the winners got Coca Cola stationary sets as prizes (donated by the UNESCO Youth Ambassador).

Both matches were very exciting and the shouts and cheers traveled a long way. Competitors were very happy with the certificates and prize presentation.

Kabubbu Community Library Newspaper Article Competition

There were nine adult entrants to the Newspaper Article Competition to write about the events happening during the volunteers visit.  Medals for first, second and third places were presented and wash bags (donated by BA) were given as participation prizes to all entrants.

The articles were very interesting, especially the one about the football game, where the author quoted the captain of the adult team saying ‘the team were shy as they did not have a football kit to play in and had to play without their shirts’.

Visit from the County Chief and CASSO (Community Action To Support The Survival Of Orphans) Project Worker

A relationship of mutual support has been established with the Buganda Kingdom Administration, through the County Chief of Kyadondo County.  Buganda is a tribal Kingdom that covers about 33% of Uganda.  At this meeting, advice was given by Victoria Vassie on improvements to the CASSO project proposal and techniques for enlisting responsible volunteers.  Materials provided for the CASSO project from donors in the UK included:

2 football kits, 15 footballs, dribbling cones and a trophy.

Two boxes of business books from the British Airways Quest Centre were donated to the Kyadondo County Tele-Centre / Library run by the Buganda Kingdom Administration.  The staff responded with a wonderful ‘Thank You’ letter.

The County Chief and CASSO Project Worker provided details of the Best Practice Show they hold for the purpose of raising the self-esteem of the orphans within their community.  They described how the orphans are prepared for the Show and the results of the event.   Kabubbu Community Library may well consider holding a similar event to boost the self-esteem of local orphans.   Orphans often fail academically in schools through a lack of support and direction from home, which is subsequently compounded by the stigmatization of failure.

Buganda Kingdom Chiefs devote time to visit Kabubbu Library events, such as Reading Festivals and Auctions to encourage the people and perform the duties of Guests of Honour.

Their administration also provides free radio advertising for Kabubbu Community Library Events and they plan to invite the King of Buganda to the opening ceremony of the Dedicated Library Building.   This will serve to attract other improvements to Kabubbu such as repair of the road and will encourage the local people to use their Library by raising its profile with attendance of the King.

This supportive relationship established on Victoria’s last visit to Kabubbu in January 2004 is now delivering many benefits to both Buganda Kingdom initiatives and Kabubbu Community Library Service.
