Meet some of the people involved in the Kabubbu Community Library Project:

From Kabubbu:

Joram Kintu - The voice of the Kabubbu Community who told Vickie everyday that they wanted to learn and wrote reminding Vickie.  When Longman sent some inspection copies to Kabubbu, Joram looked after them until the library opened.  He almost had tears in his eyes when he told Vickie about one of the books which he had read.  He was overjoyed at the access to the book.  Joram helps local students, who visit his home to use the dictionary and for help with their studies.  Vickie left one dictionary with Joram after the library opened as he can provide a 24 hour dictionary service.  Joram is a very sharing man and strives to bring the people of Kabubbu forward.  During rainstorms Joram would teach Vickie Luganda (local language).  A two way cultural exchange is very important.

George Walakira - Man with the mobil, who is Vickie's contact when she is in the UK.  George works exceptionally hard bringing the Community together and has earned great  respect from the people for his direction and love.  He often organises enormous community gatherings in order to hear the views of the people and keep them up to speed with developments. George gave a fantastic speech, before the opening of the library, when he said that if an old man like him could go back to school (the Quicken Trust have sponsored him on a Business and Management course) then all the community could feel free to attend the literacy classes.  He has a great way of putting things...

Annet Ssebaggala - Librarian and teacher.  Annet is the calm, composed mother of the Library.  She confidently read the story at the library opening so well and managed the discussion afterwards.  Annet has earned great respect from the Literacy Students for her excellent teaching.  She is well organised and arranged an eye clinic visit for the Literacy Students.  Annet's reliability is a real asset to the Library.

Ritah Nalugwa - Librarian and Teacher.  Ritah is calm and considered.  She is keen to learn and very effective at writing reports.  Ritah thought of some excellent questions to ask the Professor of Library Science at Makerere University Kampala, when he was guiding the start up of the library.  She cares excellently for the books and battles against the red dust that gets everywhere.   Ritah enjoys having fun with the children.

Francis Kibemebe
- The pen friend of Vickie's Mum, Pam.  Francis is very interested in cultural exchange and likes to listen to the radio and read the newspapers.  Francis helped to choose the local language books for the library and with the classification of the books.  Access to books provides Francis with a stimulation he was missing.

David Kato - David is a 15 year old orphan and is looking for sponsorship to attend secondary school.  Vickie was so impressed by his dedication during the library set up.  He volunteered his time all day everyday helping to stamp all the books, classify and number them.  When he got a bit tired he would just open a book and read for half an hour and then carry on working.

Seguya Puis  - Seguya is 19 and  is trying to raise money to attend University.  Seguya has a good education and is computer literate.  He was overjoyed with the provision of the Library.  Seguya has a real vision for the development of the whole community in Kabubbu.  He has used his computer skills to type up all the dual language labels and notices in the Library.  He also translates certificates and other materials Vickie produces for the Library.  Seguya has done all this as a volunteer, working in a friends office to get access to a computer.    Seguya also wrote a poem called Sponsors and Volunteers.  Seguya's next project is to start an internet business to support the library sustainably in the future.  He is currently writing his business plan and looking for ethical investors.  Seguya is one of the most dynamic 19 year olds Vickie has ever met and is very determined.

James Bukenya - Man with the smile. James, who is a teacher at Kabbubu Community Primary School, has volunteered to teach numeracy to the literacy students.James, a man with a great big grin, worked so diligently as a judge in the Literacy and Arts Competitions.

From the UK:

Vickie Brasier - Startup Co-ordinator and Researcher.  Vickie's passions are the environment and libraries.   Vickie is a dedicated breath of fresh air who has partnered extremely effectively with the Kabubbu Development Project to bring about the Library.  She adores people, especially the people of Uganda, who are no longer close to her heart but part of it.

"The people of Kabubbu are some of the most inspiring I have ever met and I love them."

When I find an angel I clip their wings so they will always be with A Ray of Hope UNESCO Youth Ambassador for the Culture of Peace. Don

BA Community Relations - Mary Barry, Mary Brew and Keren Lovett have been so supportive of Vickie and the Kabubbu Development Project, in starting the library.  They have offered an enormous variety of assistance before Vickie had time to ask for it and in doing so have helped the project overcome numerous obstacles.  Vickie greatly looks forward to their ongoing support and would like to thank them for all they have done already.
