INTRODUCTION
The
collection of student work that you are about to read has been written by
prisoners at HMP Maghaberry specifically for the Grundtvig project - our
European Union partnership with Norway and Bulgaria.
Maghaberry is a
high security prison situated near Lisburn in Northern Ireland, and is home to
almost six hundred prisoners: category A life-sentenced prisoners, prisoners
awaiting trial, female prisoners and asylum seekers.
At the very
heart of Maghaberry is the Education Department.
The
staff of the department have been very successful in encouraging prisoners to
develop their writing skills.
Indeed, Maghaberry has a high up-take in adult learning - this ranges
from basic literacy and numeracy to Open University degrees.
We
will begin by reading some of our prisoners telling you what it was like to
grow up in Northern Ireland.
These are their memories of childhood.
