Project Hope - Uganda Annual Report for the Year April 2009 – March 2010
A Ray of Hope, UNESCO

Introduction:

In its second year, Project Hope - Uganda has offered educational life-lines to approximately 25,000 community members in Nangabo Sub-County through our work:

bulletImproving educational opportunities and delivery by funding member organizations (See Appendix 1 for a list of member organizations)
bulletIntroducing family learning and developing local facilitator expertise
bulletPromoting net-working amongst member organizations in order to develop management skills

Project Hope - Uganda directly supports the introduction of the powerful technique of family learning in Nangabo Sub-County, Wakiso District.  With professional support and consultancy from the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE, UK), Project Hope - Uganda has organized the introduction and expansion of the family learning technique. This is enabling parents and their children learn together within their family setting and community learning centers.

Objectives:

  1. To support and grow friendships so that Project Hope – Uganda can empower 6 member organisations to successfully deliver a project to progress their educational objectives (this is double the previous year).
  2. To involve one representative from four member organisations to actively participate in all quality assurance activities including: proposal reviews, implementation verifications and financial audits to build up their management skills.
  3. To promote organizations forming partnerships with at least one member organization partnering with another organisation with the objective of strengthening both organisations and be able to show at the end of the year how this has benefited their operations.
  4. To provide documentation samples for evaluations, annual reports and accounts as examples of good practice and advise member organizations to prepare their own for use in communicating with funders.

In the year April 2009 – March 2010, among other things, we managed to achieve the following:

-         Member organizations have created partnerships that have progressed their educational objective. Manyangwa and Gayaza Cambridge have worked together to progress the academic performance of their students. Kabubbu Community library has kept its doors open to all members of Project Hope – Uganda to access information necessary for their service delivery. Members of Project Hope – Uganda have created partnerships with several organizations outside Project Hope – Uganda family to help them their objectives.

-         Project Hope – Uganda has provided documentation samples to all its members and provided support to them to produce similar documents as examples of good practice.

-         Member organized were involved in Project Hope quality assurance activities that sought to improve their management skills

-         Full registration with the Uganda’s Non Governmental Organizations Board. Our registration certificate number is S.5914/7517

-         We enriched a school library, a community library, a school and a community book bank with 345 copies of essential books. With these books, the number of reading material in the beneficially institutions has been improved and at the same time, teachers and learners have been enabled to access materials necessary for their learning and teaching.

-         20 classroom desks, 5 teachers’ tables and 10 chairs have been provided to a primary school. This has benefited up to 60 pupils and helped improve classroom environment in 3 classes. In addition to this, a noticeable improvement in pupils’ handwriting has been noted. Teachers’ lives in this particular school have been enhanced with proper teaching staff furniture in both classrooms and the staffroom.

-         Members of Project Hope - Uganda have continued to benefit from the net-work that the organization has helped to create and sustain. They continued to share experiences and resources, which greatly benefited them.

-         Working with CASSO, a member organization, we have seen over 60 community children equipped with life, art and craft skills that aim at making sure they can positively create change in their lives and the lives of their communities.

-         We facilitated the reproduction of 1000 copies of a children’s story book written by librarians at Kabubbu Community library. Along with this, was the facilitation of the production of local learning aides to help in the delivery of literacy programmes at Kabubbu Community Library and other community libraries.

-         We funded the representation of Kabubbu Community Library in the Community Libraries Conference in Dar-es-slaam

-         With partnership with the National Institute of Adults in Continuing Education (NIACE), we facilitated the ongoing family learning in different communities and offered refresher courses to family learning facilitators to groups from different communities. This is aimed at equipping families with skills and ability to learn together as a way of encouraging literacy and other skills development in communities.

-         2000 copies of Learners Training Manual were published to help the development of literacy through the Uganda Literacy and Adult Learners’ Association
